Well-being and Performance: two seemingly contradictory concepts

Most executives use ‘lead by example’ very selectively. You deploy it for all things related to discipline, output, and work ethic. And probably ignore it for anything related to self-care, mental health, or vulnerability.

Case in point: How many of these phrases would you be happy to say to the people you lead?

  • “Don’t be too hard on yourself – realistic expectations are a must.”

  • “If you’re feeling overwhelmed, please reach out for support, don’t just soldier on.”

  • “It’s OK to feel scared, and all concerns are valid.”

  • “Don’t burn yourself out helping others.”

  • “A good work-life balance is important.”

  • “You can’t always get it right or have all the answers.”

  • “Don’t rush – take time to reflect when things don’t go to plan.”

But how many of these statements would you actively say to yourself day-to-day as a leader?
