Most executives use ‘lead by example’ very selectively. You deploy it for all things related to discipline, output, and work ethic. And probably ignore it for anything related to self-care, mental health, or vulnerability.
Case in point: How many of these phrases would you be happy to say to the people you lead?
“Don’t be too hard on yourself – realistic expectations are a must.”
“If you’re feeling overwhelmed, please reach out for support, don’t just soldier on.”
“It’s OK to feel scared, and all concerns are valid.”
“Don’t burn yourself out helping others.”
“A good work-life balance is important.”
“You can’t always get it right or have all the answers.”
“Don’t rush – take time to reflect when things don’t go to plan.”
But how many of these statements would you actively say to yourself day-to-day as a leader?
