Customizing L&D to improve organizational performance

Good corporate citizenship with the British Council

Our partnership

The British Council partnered with Hult Ashridge Executive Education to create and deliver tailored digital learning to its employees on the subject of good corporate citizenship. The customized program – delivered through our Leadership Live platform – led to rapid skills development and better organizational outcomes.

Present in over 100 countries, the British Council is the UK’s international organization for cultural relations and educational opportunities.

Through the British Council's work in arts and culture, education, and the English language, the organization supports peace and prosperity by building connections, understanding, and trust between people in the UK and countries worldwide.

"Our short-term aim was to get to over 1,000 users, but we’ve now hit 7,000! We have all this great content, and we want people to use it as and when they need it to help them perform better."

Andy Phillips, Global Learning and Development Manager, British Council

The challenge

In the wake of historic issues with content quality and credibility when employees had previously directed their own learning, the British Council wanted to improve learning experiences by providing employees with content relevant to their skills and learning styles.

This would enable people to apply their learning directly to their roles, supporting greater organizational performance.

Our impact

Better organizational outcomes through employee learning

Within six months of launching, the program had more than 1,200 participants, pushing the total program subscription to 7,000 users.

Content was tailored using digital diagnostics to measure users’ skills and learning styles, so department heads could create tailored content playlists to roll out across the organization.

As well as saving time for the Talent & Development team, the strong relevance of the content meant employees could develop quickly and apply their learning frequently at work, supporting greater organizational performance for the British Council.

Learning was delivered in a variety of formats, including long-form articles, videos, and podcasts. The program covered:

  • Coaching & mentoring

  • Presentation skills

  • Social & emotional skills

  • Leading beyond authority

  • Higher cognitive skills

Strong uptake and impact
